Local people are considered as the repository of knowledge in regard to their natural surroundings and are also considered as the best managers in managing their social organizations. This kind of notion has helped in recognition of indigenous knowledge management system.

Over the years, there have been several case studies in relation to indigenous knowledge management system. One such study is related with the management of Yashragumba -a medicinal species. This species is considered as a prized asset as it has very good economic return. However, the increase in demand and price has made management and conservation of this species difficult.

The study was carried out in a village area of the Himalayan region. The report revealed that initially, local people used to collect the Yarshagumba in the harvest season. The locals took care of the harvesting area and also decided which area should be harvested. The people other than the locals were not allowed to collect Yarslagunnba in the area. The persons/ or the household who collect the Yarshagumba have to contribute some amount of fees to the management committee which was informal in nature. The collected fund was utilized for communal activities and development programs  such as building trails and paying the salaries for the school teachers who were hired from outside the Village.

However, since the past couple of years, the area has been open outsiders as well. All the collectors need to pay fees as before. However, the range of fees varies across the group. The locals need to pay less fees while the outsiders pay high amount of fees. Even among the outsiders, the people from nearby villages need to pay less comparatively that the ones from distant villages. The revenue collected was also said to be utilized in development initiatives such as constructing roads, temples, schools buildings and even for construction for a micro hydro power plant. A formal committee has been established for the management of Yarshagumba collection. The committee had been founded to bring focus towards revenue collection and taking harvesting of Yarshagumba as an opportunity for generating economic recourses for the area.
